Magazine Review Page: Film Magazines

Empire

As part of the coursework project I am required to design and produce a magazine review page for my short film. Such reviews are usually found in film magazines, as cinema reviews and then another review in a later edition for the DVD release. Reviews generally have the final say on the outcome of a film, having been judged on various aspects the critic will come up with a verdict and usually a score out of five stars. Reviews are helpful to both audiences and film companies, should the film get good reviews then it will get a lot of attention from audiences. In turn this is also beneficial to the viewer, who will be able to know whether or not they will like the film before they go and see it.

Though the use of review websites on the internet have made it unnecessary to buy a magazine to look at the reviews, the novelty has yet to wear off due to multiple reasons. Firstly people like to have a copy of a magazine so that they can look at all the different films that are being released as well as news and celeb interviews, all in one place. It is also nice to have a physical book to look through with lots of bright pictures and colour layouts. Another reason people still go to magazines for film news and reviews is because they know the brand, such as Empire and Total Film. These two big names are probably the most popular film magazines out there and they have earned themselves a trusted opinion.

The first thing that people see when they buy a magazine is the cover, this is why they are often bold and full of things to look at. This is how the magazine must sell itself to the viewer, cramming all the exciting features of the magazine onto the cover as well as an image which will draw your attention. The cover picture is usually from the film which has the biggest feature within the magazine, usually a preview of an up and coming film. The main characters are usually presented in a mid shot showing all of the torso and they will often be covering a part of the title. The title of the magazine is bold and consumes the entire top region of the cover, however it does not have to be in the fore ground because the brand should be known. The design of the focal image is often similar to that which would be present on a film poster, which makes it relevant to the other part of my ancillary task.
